if you're using clorazepate to treat anxiety- something's missing. With valium (diazepam/ Roche)- two distinct actions, anxiety relief and skeletal muscle relaxation- to calm emotions and relax tense muscles. Heightened emotional tension is accompanied by increased muscular tension in 65% of patients. In a multicenter study, valium demonstrated the ability to produce a statistically significant reduction in psychogenic muscular symptoms in 67 patients- even after just one week of treatment, with continuing improvement throughout four weeks of treatment. With valium- a greater choice of dosage forms- three oral strength plus I.M. and I.V. with valium- diazepam itself0 working in concert with three active metabolites for the response you know and trust. With valium- an unmatched record of clinical experience and safety. With all benzodiazepines- caution patients against drinking alcohol and against the immediate resumption of activities requiring complete mental alertness, such as driving. Freedom to think clearly. Centrax (prazepam) antianxiety therapy with a low order of side effects. An effective antianxiety agent. More than a decade of controlled clinical trials has confirmed that prazepam relieves symptoms of both primary and somatic anxiety. Patients usually remain alert. At recommended dosage, drowsiness is infrequent (6.8%) with centrax. A psychomotor performance study in a normal population showed no statistically significant impairment with prazepam at recommended doses. Changes in mentation are minimized. With centrax, lightheadedness is infrequent (6.8%). Signs of altered states of mind are rare. Also, the characteristic pharmacokinetic profile of centrax provides low potential for noticeable dose-related transient peaks of drug effect. Flexible dosage with distinctive capsule form. The usual dose is 10mg t.i.d. However, centrax may also be administered b.i.d. or h.s to adapt to individual patient's needs, prazepam, parke-davis, traditional nuclear family on a picnic, father and son playing baseball, mother reading to daughter. one of nature's most specific designs… Bee language. The dance patterns formed by honeybees in flight are specifically designed to communicate where and how far away a source of nectar lies. The "round dance" (fig 1.) is a pattern of alternating circles- first to the right, then to the left, then to the right again- that lets other bees know that nectar is nearby. Another pattern (Fig.2) is called the "wagging dance." the bee moves forward in the direction of the nectar while wagging its bottom, then flies back to its starting place. The faster the wagging, the nearer the nectar. The "sickle dance" (fig.3) is a pattern used by italian honeybees to indicate intermediate distances. The opening of the "sickle" faces the source of the nectar; the vigerousness of the dance indicates the quality pf the nectar. This degree of specificity in communication is unusual in nature. Such specificity is almost as rare in medicine. Few agents surpass the specificity of librium (chloroddiazepoxide HCl/Roche) for the treatment of anxiety symptoms and disorders. Rarely affecting mental acuity at proper doses, predictable in its pattern of response, safely used in millions of patients, rapid and effective- these are the specific advantages of Librium. Caution patients about driving, operating hazardous machinery, or drinking alcohol while on librium therapy. Librium. The specific anxiolytic. 1981 AJP haldol
Fragile, handle with haldol (haloperidol) tablets/concentrate/ injection. Controls disturbed behaviour usually without complicating side effects. Haldol haloperidol effectively controls psychotic symptoms, including disruptive behaviour, without undue sedation- permitting a better quality of life for many disturbed elderly patients. While some instances of drowsiness have been reported, marked sedation is rare. Minimizes likelihood of cardiovascular complications. Haldol is unlikely to cause hypotension which can result in dizziness and falls. Transient hypotension seldom occurs; severe orthostatic hypotension has not been reported. Few troublesome side effects. Blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation and urinary retention- which can be extremally upsetting to older persons suffering from dementia- are infrequent with haldol. Extrapyramidal symptoms, when seen, are generally dose-related and readily controllable; usually they do not occur at the very low doses of haldol used in treating the elderly. Tasteless, odorless, colourless concentrate. Haldol concentrate can be added to food, juices, or water to improve acceptability in patients unwilling or unable to swallow solid medication, it also permits the very small dosage adjustments sometimes needed for geriatric patients, haloperidol, McNeil Pharmaceutical, old woman in lace holding tea cup, looking suspicious, next page shows pills and concentrate options.

behind the tears… anxious depression. Most depressed patients are also anxious. When a patient weeps as you take her history, suspect the presence of depression and anxiety. Most patients who have one of these conditions have the other to some degree. In fact, 7 of 10 nonpsychotic depressed patients can be classifies as anxious depressed. And most also have somatic complaints. Many patients with anxiety-depression- two-things in alone large study- have significant somatic symptoms. Headache, backache, and other regional pains, and dizzy spells, are among those commonly reported. In fact, the patient is more likely to complain about somatic symptoms than anxiety and depression. Behind wide-range response. Specific action: limbitrol, providing both the antianxiety action of librium (chlordiazepoxide HCl/ Roche) and the antidepressant action of amitriptyline, is appropriate to relieve the symptom clusters of depression and anxiety. Early relief of insomnia, anorexia and agitation is typical of therapy with limbitrol. Feelings of guilt and worthlessness also respond, often within a week. Rapid action. The therapeutic lag typical when amitriptyline is used alone is not seen with limbitrol. In a nationwide multicenter study, a degree of relief that took two weeks with amitriptyline alone was ofther seen in one week with libritrol. Among areas where improvement was significantly superior were worke and activities, hypochondriasis, psychic and somatic anxiety and feelings of pessimism. Fewer treatment failures. In tis study, far fewer patients taking limbitrol dropped out of therapy because of treatment failure or side effects, compared to patients taking amitriptyline alone. Despite a higher incidence of drowsiness with limbitrol, patients were better able to tolerate medication. Limbitrol 5-12.5 is recommended to minimize drowsiness and for elderly patients. Effectiveness without a phenothiazine. Limbitrol offers rapid relief without the phenothiazines contained in other dual-entity medications. The causal relationship between the phenothiazines and tardive dyskinesia or other extrapyramidal side effects is well established. In contrast, the reported incidence of these adverse reactions with Limbitrol or either of its components is rare. All patients should be cautioned about driving, drinking alcohol or performing hazardous tasks during therapy. Limbitrol . when depression disrupts the day… Norpramin (desipramine hydrochloride tablets NF). For the depressed patient who must remain active during the day. Helps the patient remain calm but active. In addition, begins to improve sleep patterns within one week in some patients. As the depression is relieved, difficulty in falling asleep, restlessness, and early morning awakening diminish, less anticholinergic activity (see warnings). Studies in the laboratory and in normal human subjects have shown that desipramine has less anticholinergic activity than amitriptyline or doxepin. This may mean: less dry mouth, less blurred vision, less urinary retention. Potent blocker of norepinephrine re-uptake. Current evidence suggests depression results from inadequate levels of norepinephrine or serotonin here, at the synaptic cleft. If your patient is unresponsive to treatment with one tricyclic, consider switching to a tricyclic that blocks the re-uptake of a different neurotransmitter. Norpramin offers improved sleep patterns beginning within one week in some patients., norpramin provides less anticholinergic activity than amitriptyline or doxepin, as shown in laboratory studies and studies in normal human subjects. now from sandoz… a step closer to the ideal hypnotic. New restoril (temazepam) hypnotic action… with minimal accumulation. Introducing the first new benzodiazepine for sleep… in a decade. New restoril (temazepam) has the shortest half life of any current hypnotic benzodiadepine. It will provide hypnotic action with minimal drug accumulation. Most patients awaken from a full night's sleep alert and refreshed. Also Restoril affords sleep right from the first night for patients with insomnia, eg. Outpatients, hospitalized or convalescent/nursing home patients. Restoril (temazepam) has been tested and proved effective not only in sleep lens but in the patients' bedrooms- the environment where the problem exists. A short half life.. And "ideal" half-life. A short half life: restoril (temazepam) has a mean half-life of 10 hours, the mean half life of flurazepam is 64 hours. The shorter half life permits clearance of most medication prior to the next dose. The half-life of restoril (temazepam) parappels normal sleep time thereby reducing the frequency of middle of the night and early morning awakenings. Minimal to no accumulation. Restoril (temazepam) shows minimal to no accumulation in the body. The activity is essentially limited to the ngith of ingestion… the effect is not additive. This rapid elimination and lack of accumulation virtually eliminates residual hangover effects. Most patients awaken from a full night's sleep feeling alert and refreshed. REM sleep remains virtually unchanged. Works one night at a time… from the first knight. Highly effective in 21 double blind, placebo-controlled studies involving 1221 adult patients (508 of whom received restoril capsules), restoril (temazepam) proved to be an effective sleep agent. The following advantages were noted: therapeutically effective on the first night of therapy. Significantly reduced number of nocturnal awakenings. Effective total sleep time of 7 to 8 hours. Significant improvement in general quality of sleep. Residual redication effect essentially absent. REM sleep remains essentially unchanged. No tolerance reported to date after approximately one month of use (26 patients). Patients receiving Restoril (temazepam) should be cautioned about possible combined effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants, and about operating machinery or driving a vehicle after ingesting the drug. An alert awakening… and an alert patient. Because of the short half life of restoril, there is a minimal accumulation of drug in the body, leaving the patient essentially free of drug effect and showing little or no impairment of behaviour in the morning. In placebo-controlled studies, patients receiving Restoril capsules reported being at least as awake in the morning and as alert the following day as did the patients who received placebo. Useful for most adult insomniacs. Restoril (temazepam) has been used effectively in adult and elderly patient's with recurring insomnia, and in situations requiring restful sleep. New restoril (temazepam) one dose… one night's sleep. No more… no less., temazepam, Sandoz, hour glass in front of sunset on water in bottom left, graph on opposite page. when depression expresses itself. Sinequan (doxepin HCl). Antidepressant effectiveness with convenient one a day hs dosage. Artist Leonard Leff uses sculpture to express the painful depression he once experiences. He remembers it as "a lowering of the flame of life. My energies ebbed, my will to live decreased, and I found myself retreating from the activities of life to a more introverted existence." Antidepressant effectiveness: Sinequan (doxepin HCl). Convenient once an day dosage which may improve patient compliance. The total daily dosage up to 150 mg per day may be given on a once a day schedule without loss of effectiveness. Sinequan may also be given on a divided dosage schedule up to 300 mg per day. Prominent sedative effect which may help to relieve the difficulty in falling and staying asleep, and the early-morning awakening often associated with depression. Established antianxiety activity to help alleviate anxiety which often accompanies clinical depression. Usually well tolerated at doses up to 150 mg per day. Sinequan does not generally affect the antihypertensive activity of quanethidine and related compounds. Tachycardia and hypertension have been reported occasionally. Drowsiness is the most commonly observed side effect. Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention have been reported.
