The Horseshot.
(Smirnoff, tomato juice and horseradish)
Someone, it seems, is always trying to improve on the Bloody Mary. But only rarely do we run across a variant we consider successful. Recently we discovered just such a happy exception when a ski-touring friend stopped through and suggested we try a Horseshot. "It has a pleasant and rambunctious edge to it," was his claim "like the flavour of that red cocktail sauce that you can never quite get enough of." We agree with our friend and also this simple rule for enjoying The Horseshot: "I save it for apres-ski."
To make a Horseshot, pour 1 1/2 oz. Smirnoff into a glass with ice. Fill with tomato juice, add horseradish to taste and stir., Brand: Smirnoff selling vodka. So many things go well with Smirnoff, that now, adventurous mixers are adding two ingredients of Smirnoff at once. One such concoction, using milk and maple syrup and dubbed the Polar Bear has found its way into our willing hands. Like it's namesake, the Polar Bear is white and on the ice. We are so please with it's appearance and its flavours that we want to share its pleasures with you. The Jungle Jim.

Every youngster knows how beautifully bananas go with milk or cream. For most grown ups, however, it's a fond memory. But is there a reason why that glorious, gold-white taste of yesteryear should remain a memory? Searching for that weighty question, we came upon a drink called The Jungle Jim, which we heartily recommend to friends of Smirnoff, with just one admonition. Because The Jungle Jim will conjure up pleasant memories of bananas in cream, it may make you forget that you're putting any two ounces of liquor. Don't forget.

Sommet Rouge and Sommet Blanc, Canadian wines with European accent.… If the taste of a wine is what makes it either great or an also-ran, Calona's Sommet Rouge and Sommet Blanc are outstanding. They won Gold and Silver medals respectively in last year's Monde Selection competition against wines from the world's greatest vineyards. Both owe their European character to French Hybrid Grapes that have carefully been nurtured in the sunny clime of B.C's Okanagan Valley. Sommet Rouge is a blend from the French hybrids and Premium Californian varieties, all fully matured in oak casks. The result: A robust dry wine that belongs in even the most elegant setting. "I'd been planning Joey's party all week. For a surprise, I even baked nickels and dimes right into the cake. "Everything was going great. Eight little eight-year olds just having a ball. Then, the crunch came. During Happy Birthday, Tommy spilled his pop all over Steven's head. "That was the end of any kind of order. Everyone got in the act, even Trixie, our Cocker Spaniel. "It was a super party. I enjoyed it almost as much as the kids. But did I ever need a break. A few minutes to relax and get myself together again. I just sat down with a cup of tea. It gave me a few very special moments to think about birthdays, and kids, and how important they both are. It was a nice feeling."

It's a good career move, Jennings. Big promotion, new friends. You're on your way to the top..."Sure. Here I am feeling like a refugee with my entire world piled around me in boxes, crates, and wrapping paper. "But really, I guess I am pretty lucky. This move would have been twice as tough if my wife hadn't been here. In fact, when I think about it, she's done most of the organizing, and I've done all the complaining. I mean she even managed time to find the tea and make a pot for the two of us. What a super idea. It was a great chance to sit back, relax and put things into proper perspective in our own minds. That cup of tea gave us the break we needed. "But more importantly, it helped make us feel we were home again."
