1996 Maclean's Wiser's 2

He searched high and low for the perfect barrels, then set fire to them. To J.P. Wiser, charring the inside of a barrel was a sort of burnt-offering: you sacrifice a bit of the barrel for the greater good of the whisky. By charring his barrels, J.P. made it easier for the whisky to get right into the wood, and vice versa. The result was a velvety smooth, charcoal flavoured spirit with a rich amber colour. It's a process we still follow today. In fact, you can rest assure that every single drop of Wiser's De Luxe has spent a minimum of 10 long years mellowing in a charred oak cask. Just as J.P. would have done it. When it came to making the very best whisky, he was Wiser. HE WAS WISER., Brand: Wiser's De Luxe selling whisky. Full page ad. Background looks like a yellow old parchment paper. Header and footer in large black font. Header has a few sketches of oak barrels and J.P. Wiser. Text below the sketches in small black font. Bottom right corner has an image of a bottle of Wiser's de Luxe and a glass of whisky.

Unlike the other great 'Whisky Barons' he never acquired a big butt. J.P. Wiser refused to age his whisky in 110 gallon 'butts'. "A barrel of that enormity," he said, "bequeaths absolutely nothing to its contents". Thus, all the whisky J.P. produced would acquire its unique smoky flavour and uncommonly mellow body in a small 55 gallon cask. The way J.P. saw it, the closer the wood was to the whisky, the closer the whisky would be to perfection. These days very little has changed. In fact, every last drop of whisky bearing the Wiser's De Luxe name still spends a minimum 10 long years ripening in charred oak casks, just as J.P. specified. When it came to making the very best whisky, he was Wiser. HE WAS WISER., Brand: Wiser's De Luxe selling whisky. Full page ad. Background looks like a yellow old parchment paper. Header and footer in large black font. Header has a few sketches of oak barrels, other whisky makers and J.P. Wiser. Text below the sketches in small black font. Bottom right corner has an image of a bottle of Wiser's de Luxe and a glass of whisky.

Indians prove to be Messters not Masters By Sunil Gavaskar SHARJAH, January 9. India's hopes of staying alive in the Masters tourney were killed by a truly professional display by the Eng-land Masters. Although the Indian Masters got off to a brilliant start with Srikkanth and Binny they were not able to consolidate to get a big en-ough score, not only to stay in the tournament but also to beat England. Srikkanth, captaining the side, was well aware of the fact that the In-dian team needed him to stay at the crease for as many overs as possible and he tried to curb his natural incli-nation to attack. Yet, when the bad ball came along he simply used the old style of smashing it and then walking to the square leg umpire. Roger Binny, playing his first match of the event, took some time to sort out his footwork. He has been on the golf course more often than on a cricket pitch and there is no stroke on the backfoot in golf, but once he sorted it out he played three glorious shots in one over from Radford, who had his revenge getting him out caught behind off a slower delivery. Vengsarkar has not been able to recapture his form at the Masters in Bombay and so the onus of scoring runs, and that too quickly, was left to Patil and Yashpal Sharma. Both of them did a fine job for their team with some big hits and Yashpal in particu-lar played some great shots. The Indians were entitled to think that 235 was a let-down after the tre-mendous start they had been given by their openers. The pitch was very good to bat on, perhaps the best so far in the tournament, and so it was going to take some fine effort from the Indians to conain the English-men. Graham Gooch was back to open-ing the innings and he and Barnett got the team off to a flying start, even better than the Indians had got be-cause they simply carried on and on. Barnett got out when it looked like he was going for another century to make up for the duck he got against the West Indies. Their partnership destroyed any chances India had and the way they batted they made the In-dian bowling look very ordinary. The Indian fielding has never been one to draw oohs and aahs from the crowd and the display today was more for bahs and boos than any-thing else! Luckily for them Gooch went into an ultra attacking mode where he not only found gaps consis-tently but also hit some big ones out of the ground which did not test the fielders. By the 30th over of the innings the Indians were probably thankful that England had only 235 to chase be-cause they knew the match would get over quickly. Derek Randall, who has not had a big innings in the event used the op-portunity to get some practice. Towards the end, the Indians were going through the motions. They certainly made a mess of chasing a modest West Indies score in the first match and messed up again in scoring only 215 against Pa-kistan and then messed up the op-portunity provided by that positive opening start in this game. On this performance in the tour-nament, where they have lost every single game the nomenclature for the team should be changed to MES-STERS instead of Masters! - (Professional Management Group) ALWAYS Coca Cola CRICKET, This is an ad for Coca Cola. It is not stated who the manufactuer is. The ad contains a story titled 'Indians prove to be Messters not Masters' by Sunil Gavaskar, describing a cricket game between the Indian and West Indies teams. Carlisle Best overshadows the 'King' By Sunil Gavaskar SHARJAH, January 10, After the smashing performance by the England Masters, the cal-culators in the Pakistani camp would have told them that they needed to score almost 300 runs to win and thus qualify for the finals. In much the same way as the Indians must have been aware before their game against England, the Pakistanis must have know that it was like asking to be on another planet. This West Indian side have been so used to winning in their salad days, that it is just an extension of that even in the Masters tournament. They are still without the services of Joel Garner, the captain, who is suf-fering from the after effects of the flu and Gordon Greenidge, their man of the tournament in the first Masters event in Bombay has also been out of action with an injury. The West Indies have been strengthened by the presence of Mal-colm Marshall and Desmond Haynes. Haynes has been leading the side and his superb century against Eng-land had already ensured their entry into the finals. His hopes of repeat-ing the performance were dashed when Sadiq Mohammed dived in front to pick up a marvellous catch. Alvin Greenidge, promoted in the order, did not make much use of the opportunity, but Carlisle Best who had got run-out for a duck in the pre-vious match made up for that. Batting with Viv Richards is never easy, sim-ply because all eyes are focussed on the 'The King' and one has to bat bril-liantly to draw attention away from Richards. That is the disadvantage, but the advantages are many for the bowlers ae demoralised so quickly in 'The King's' presence that the batsman batting with him can also make merry. It is also good to be the silent part-ner with Richards and give him as much of the strike as possible. Best managed to do his own thing, not quite following the usual pattern of Richards' partners. He is reputed to give a running commentary when he bats and it would have been interest-ing if he had been wired like the fielding captains are. He must have to do a long stint because he went on to become the highest scorer in the tournament. He kept smashing the ball to all parts of the ground and over it as well. The Pakistani bowling simply wil-ted and even after Richards was out, Best and Kallicharan piled on the runs and the agony for the Pakistanis and the Windies score of 295 for 3 was easily the highest in the tourna-ment. The Pakistanis had to get in 38 overs to quality for the finals and with Marshall in the opposition ranks, it was going to be a nightmare. That was what happened as 'Macko' ripped out the first two wick-ets and Moseley too chipped in with a couple. Zaheer tried to ensure that there was no rout under 100 and Best completed a fine day for himself by getting the Pakistani captain caught in the deep. Wasim Raja and Aftab Baloch, knowing that the target was beyond reach played quietly even when Haynes brought on all his irregular bowlers in order to finish the match quickly and to ensure that his main bowlers were kept relatively fresh for the Friday final. That should be something to look forward to as Eng-land is getting better with every out-ing and the West Indians are looking as invincible as in the past. To the followers of the Indian and Pakistani teams, there must have been disappointment but the fact is that they are not even half as fit as the West Indian and England teams and have really looked their age. They battle for the third and fourth place (Professional Management Group) ALWAYS Coca Cola CRICKET, This is an ad for Coca Cola. It is not stated who the manufacturer is.
