In therapeutic doses it exerts a selective depressant action on the structures of the limbic system without markedly affecting the other areas of the brain. This has the effect of screening the physiological mechanism which controls the onset of sleep from disturbing emotional stimuli. The result: deeper sleep. Conventional hypnotics depress the entire central nervous system, relatively indiscriminately inhibiting all areas of the brain, thus inducing a miniature anesthesia in the patient. 2.EFFECTIVE.
