The specificity of Mellaril (thioridazine). Active in the limbic system where psychotic symptoms arise… less active where neurotoxic effects occur. Striatal system- minimal extrapyramidal stimulation. Hypothalamus- little effect on temperature-control mechanisms. Hippocampus- minimal effect on seizure threshold. Emetic center- minimal antiemetic activity. Although extrapyramidal effects are characteristic of antipsychotic agents in general, with Mellaril (thioridazine) extrapyramidal stimulation is minimal. Adding an antiparkinsonism agent- which can cause its own side effects- can usually be avoided. Neuroleptic drugs elevate prolactin levels; the elevation persists during chronic administration.
