Summary of prescribing information: Formula: Each sugar-coated tablet contains: Trifluoperazine hydrochloride I.P. 5 mg. and Benzhexol hydrochloride B.P. 2mg. Indications: Treatment of symptoms and prevention of relapse in schizophrenia and in other psychoses, especially of the paranoid type, but not in depressive psychoses. Adjunctive therapy in the short term management of sever psychomotor agitation. Benzehexol hydrochloride is useful in the prevention or control of extra-pyramidal disorders. Dosage: In adults only. The recommended starting does is one tablet twice daily. It may be increased after a week to 1 tablet three times a day. Maintenance: When satisfactory control has been attained, the dosage should be reduces gradually until an effective maintenance level is established. Contraindications: Comatose or stuporous patients, blood dyscrasias, bone marrow depressions, pre-existing liver damage, uncontrolled cardiac decompensation. Precautions: Reduce initial dosage in elderly patients to minimise extrapyramidal and hypotensive effects. Caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, narrow angle glaucoma. Potentiation may occur if combined with CNS depressants. Benhexol hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma, obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tracts, in elderly males with possible prostatic hypertrophy, cardiac, liver or kidney disorders. Avoid use in pregnancy unless essential. Breat-feeding is acceptable at the discretion of the physician. Side effects: Due to Trifluoperazine: Lassitude, reactions including photosensitivity reactions, weight gain, oedema and confusion may occasionally occur. Hyperprolactinemia with associated effects at higher dosage. Rarely neuroleptic malignant syndrome, cholestatic jaundice, and blood dyscrasias. Due to benzhexol hydrochloride as a consequence of anti-muscarinic activity. How applied: in strips of 10 tablets. |
