What's life without pharmaceutical research? Shorter.
Research based pharmaceutical companies make the discoveries that cure disease and provide a better quality of life for Canadians. Without pharmaceutical research, the search for cures for many illnesses that plague us today would cease. The threat of AIDS, SARS and West Nile Virus would be a fact of life. And for many people, life would be shorter. And very painful. Innovation takes time and cost money. On average, it takes about 12 years and over a billion dollars to bring a single discovery to the Canadian market. The researchers and companies that invest this time and money need governments to work in partnership with them. Governments can either encourage the search for cures, or not.
